On January 13th, a coalition of 24 Pacific Northwest organizations submitted a letter strongly objecting to the Trump administration’s proposed rule to allow shipment of LNG by rail.

The proposed rule, from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration, could result in 100-car trains carrying volatile fracked gas through communities along rail routes. Our coalition letter urges PHMSA and federal regulators to abandon this proposal, while also ensuring adequate understanding of its potential impact through a full Environmental Impact Statement.

The proposal raises grave concerns for human health, safety, and our climate. 15 state Attorney Generals, including Bob Ferguson of Washington and Ellen Rosenblum of Oregon, submitted a letter also strongly objecting to the rule.
